On 22 October 1969, following months of secret discussions, four shipping companies put their signatures to a merger contract that would mark the dawn of a new company: Nedlloyd. The ‘United’ exhibition tells the story of the creation of this global enterprise: the economic circumstances of the merger and its implications for those involved. The history of the creation of Nedlloyd is told against the background of the turbulent years of the 60s and 70s, an age that saw radical changes in the structure of the shipping industry as a result of the changeover to container transport. For the shipping companies, there was only one way of surviving this transition: a merger was inevitable. The historical material in ‘United’ has been taken from the Nedlloyd collection at the Maritime Museum.
