In the Delfshaven district there are four fascinating green spots. A city hike along this green mile takes about 2 hours.
Rugged nature of Spangen
Between the castle of Sparta and the children’s farm Bokkesprong on the Spaanse Bocht lies the Spoordijk of the Natuurlijk Spangen foundation. Since the freight trains disappeared, nature on the 800-meter-long dike has been doing its thing, there is an exciting path through the wilderness.
The Roof Park
This garden at 9 meters high has a spectacular view of the harbors and high-rise buildings around it. At 1,200 meters long, it is the largest roof park in Europe. You can sunbathe and barbecue here, while the kids are splashing around. When the wind blows, you can retreat to the Warmte Kamer, a walled garden with Mediterranean plants. In the summer there is often a kiosk with home-made snacks and all kinds of activities take place, from yoga to boot camp.
Avant-garde art on the Keileweg
At the Keileweg you will come across a fascinating plot: a lush garden with larger than life statues by Atelier Van Lieshout in the background. It is the first and oldest food garden in the Netherlands, where volunteers grow vegetables for the poor of the city. On the same plot is the open-air storage of the famous sculptor Van Lieshout, the studio itself is not accessible. At the Food Garden, Max the Vegetable Gardener gives contemporary courses on permaculture, food forests and composting.
