The Port of Rotterdam Authority provided the financial means to realise a maritime artwork in Hoek van Holland in 2007. The municipality then asked the people of Hoek van Holland to vote on the submitted works of art.
The Anker in het Gras artwork design by Reinier Lagendijk received the most votes. Reinier Lagendijk was born in The Hague in 1969 and studied at the Academy of Visual Arts in Enschede. The work of art is an elevation of the grass in the form of an anchor with two metal links and measures 30 x 30 metres. Reinier Lagendijk: ‘The anchor is a symbol for shipping and forms a natural tattoo in the landscape from which you can look at the water from the shore.’
