Easter falls late in 2019 and that means even better weather when you visit! Rain isn’t a problem either by the way: there are indoor festivals, the museums and shops are open and the traditional Pasar Malam is back.
It will be a Good Friday (19 April) for campers because the Culture Campsite will open on creative ground De Kroon. It’s not your usual campsite; the architectural and artistic sleeping objects fall somewhere in between glamping and hotel. Mattress and bedding are provided, but the toilet and shower are in a sustainably used art object. If you find this too much comfort, try City Camping Rotterdam. For those who like the beach, visit Camping Hoek van Holland.
The Easter weekend is the start of the festival season. Enthusiasts of the alternative genre will enjoy themselves at Motel Mozaïque with artists like Apparat, Altin Gun and Kokoroko from 18 to 20 April. You might not have heard of these artists; the focus is on new music. There are also routes for discovering (unknown) Rotterdam and there is art. If dancing is more your thing, go to ‘Stille Zaterdag’ (Quiet Saturday, which it will certainly not be) at Blijdorp X de Doelen.
Before Easter, the world-famous St. Matthew Passion by Bach will be performed several times: at the Laurenskerk on 6 April (2x) and 14 April, and at the Doelen on 11 April. The African Passion is on at the Old Luxor Theatre on 11 April. While The Passion is on in Dordrecht (easy to visit from Rotterdam with the Waterbus) on Thursday, 18 April, you can also watch the lesser known but equally beautiful St. John Passion. You can hear all the famous hits from The Passion at Rotterdam Ahoy on Saturday, 20 April. The kids can take part in an Easter egg hunt in Plaswijckpark on Easter Sunday and Monday.
