Cabin Crew: Fashion in the Air

23 Sep 2017 - 4 Feb 2018
This autumn, the Kunsthal Rotterdam will present 'Cabin Crew. Fashion in the Air’. The exhibition is a fascinating fashion retrospective of stewardess outfits from airline companies around the world.

Subject to fashion and zeitgeist, the outfits were influenced by a variety of styles throughout the decades, from functional and modest to stylish and elegant. The tailoring and colour of the uniforms, the hats, the shape and design of the scarfs, the blouses and the emblems; not a single detail was ever overlooked. Some airline companies even call in the assistance of famous fashion designers to create outfits for their cabin crew. The current KLM uniforms, for instance, were designed by the well-known Dutch couturier Mart Visser, and internationally many other renowned designers, including Yves Saint Laurent and Cristóbal Balenciaga, also created looks for airline staff. The extraordinary selection of uniforms in the exhibition is part of the Dutch purser Cliff Muskiet’s collection. From 1993 onwards he managed to acquire over 1405 uniforms from 523 different airline companies. The exhibition ‘Cabin Crew’ is part of the Kunsthal’s mission to disclose hidden private collections.
