Here We Are!

18 June 2022 till 30 October 2022

How is it possible that so many women designers have been overlooked and left out of the history books? What role have women played in the development of furniture design, industrial design, or interior design? What is our current position with regard to researching this, and how will we move on from here? The exhibition ‘Here We Are! Women in Design 1900 – Today’ presents over eighty women designers who have made a crucial contribution to the development of modern and contemporary design.

Kunsthal Rotterdam is putting the spotlights on the previously underexposed work of women artists, covering 120 years of design history through examples from the collection of the Vitra Design Museum. From iconic modernist designs, which have only recently been attributed to women like Charlotte Perriand and Eileen Gray, to influential designers who were operating behind the scenes and some recently discovered figures. Also featured are activist feminist networks and sustainable designers who are defining contemporary design, such as Julia Lohmann and Christien Meindertsma.

The exhibition offers a broad perspective on the social and societal context in which women designers have been, and still are, practising their profession. Visitors are invited to reflect on the dominant narrative about design that we have been hearing until recently, and on how they would want it to be told from now on.
