Shortly after the death of his newly born daughter Dvorák set to work on his Stabat Mater.
In the two years it took to complete the work his two other children
died as well. The music – which depicts Mary’s mourning for the death of
her son – exudes the sadness of such an immense loss. Dvorák’s Stabat Mater, however, expresses solace, which makes it such an unusually moving masterpiece.
