Smoke is coming out of the Van Nelle Factory again. Not because the production of coffee, tea and tobacco has started again, but because the largest BBQ restaurant (over 1,100 m2, 160 seats!) In the Netherlands is now located in the former company fire station: Black Smoke Rotterdam.
The “black smoke” has come over from Antwerp. There self-proclaimed pyro-culinary adventurer Jord Althuizen and his Belgian BBQ buddy Kasper Stuart opened Black Smoke in 2016 in a former brewery. In 2019 it was time to open a business in that other port city.
The space inside is divided into different zones, with space for intimate tables for two and spaces for groups. All these places have a view of the hell’s kitchen where the dishes are prepared. From yankee-style “low & slow” BBQ dishes to hot & fast assado-style South American BBQ classic to the Japanese hibachi grill, for the preparation of refined Asian BBQ food.
More than meat
The meat lover will naturally be satisfied, but there are also lighter fish and vegetable dishes on the menu, such as grilled watermelon. There is also a next level cocktail bar, which is also the setting for club nights and special events. For a crafted cocktail with South American snacks you can go to the Venezuelan outdoor bar (200 seats!).
