De Markthal

De Markthal

The Markthal has about 100 fresh food stands, nearly 15 food shops and various restaurants, with a supermarket and a four-level underground car park below. As you wander amongst the market stands, look up to enjoy the massive artwork sprawling across the ceiling: the ‘Horn of Plenty’ by Arno Coenen and Iris Roskam. Thanks to this grand span of art, the Markthal has been referred to as the Dutch version of the Sistine Chapel.

Grocery shopping

Grocery shopping can also be done after regular business hours. Many supermarkets in Rotterdam are open until 20:00. The Jumbos on Hillelaan, Botersloot and the Schiedamseweg, are open seven days a week, until 22:00. The Albert Heijns on Schouwburgplein, Meent and the Oudedijk are open every evening until 22:00, with the exception of Sunday.

At night

There are almost 20 night shops to be found in Rotterdam. These are open after 22:00 for that forgotten bag of chips or bottle of liquor. Most of the night shops are open from 17:00 until 01:00 or 02:00. It is often possible to get the night shops to deliver groceries.
