Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen
Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen is one of the oldest museums in the Netherlands. Its collection is built on the legacy of jurist Frans Jacob Otto Boijmans, who left his personal collection to the city of Rotterdam in 1849. In 1958, the name of benefactor Daniël George van Beuningen was added to the museum after the acquisition of his collection. The current museum building opened in 1935; it is a historic building designed specially for the collection by city architect Adrian van der Steur. The stately presence in red brick houses intimate galleries and amply sized salons in which the art can be viewed in natural light.
The collection includes paintings, sculptures and objects, as well as an important collection of drawings and etchings. It features many major Dutch and European works spanning the period from the early middle ages to the 21st century, from Van Bosch to Rembrandt, and from Van Gogh to Dalí and Dutch Design.
Throughout the year, the museum hosts a rich spectrum of temporary exhibits on a variety of subjects. Visitors can follow various tours and workshops, either individually or in groups (15 persons and up). The Boijmans Tour, for example, can be followed on an iPod rented from the museum or downloaded onto the visitor's own device.
The museum restaurant, Het Paviljoen, is a large space with ample natural light and a view of the museum garden, where visitors can enjoy salads, soups, sandwiches, or coffee and cake. The Espressobar on the museum's inner courtyard serves espresso, cappuccino, teas, juices and light bites on the large patio.
Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen is located adjacent to Museum Park in the Museumkwartier district and is easy to get to by metro or tram 7 or 20 (Eendrachtsplein stop). From Rotterdam Central Station, it is about a 15-minute walk. The Museum Park parking garage is adjacent to the museum building.
