Forms of (ex-)Change

17 May 2024 till 6 October 2024

Forms of (ex-)Change

The exhibition is curated by Maureen Mooren, head of design at the Nieuwe Instituut and teacher at the HGB, and Armand Mevis, graphic designer and head of the Werkplaats Typografie. For Forms of (ex-)Change, the curators have invited designers to express the changes that are close to their hearts. The exhibition is not only about exchange, but is itself also an outcome or product of the exchange between different disciplines, practices, forms of knowledge and cultures.

Creating a graphic image is never a neutral exchange between a sender and a receiver. The interpretation, assumptions or prejudices and the personal background of the recipient always influence it. It’s about inclusion and exclusion, cultural understanding and access. On the other hand, it is at least as vulnerable to being ‘seen’. The way an audience weighs the work creates a kind of one-way conversation in which the sender runs the risk of being misunderstood. Within Forms of (ex-)Change, professional designers and design students work in an occasional collective on a layered image that reflects the exchange and change – the (ex-)change – in their joint practice.

Forms of (ex-)Change shows the work of Alexey Malygin, Anja Groten, Camille Caspersen, Christiane Biniek, Ehab Assadi, Elias Erkan, Emil Feinweber, Emilia Sladek, Farida Sedoc, Gabriel Wintergerst, Hannes Drissner, Jinhye Lee, Johanna Nethe, John Babenschneider, Jonathan Castro Alejos, Kathi Siebenhandl, Lam Funke, Leitu Bonnici, Lion Mayer, Lisa Lagova, Lydienne Albertoe, Matas Buckus, Merle Petsch, Meta Weckeßer, Jizz Taco (Michiel Terpelle), Milad Shahmoradi, Nuno Beijinho, Ossama Morad, Paul Nilling, Rami Hariri, Rietlanden Womens office, Rita Palha Lopes, Ruben Pater, Sarah Halbgewachs, Sohyeon Lee, Sören Sandbothe, Tato Greve, Theetat Thunkijanukij, Ward Goes, Wouter Stroet, XiaoHan Zhang, Yang Yaqi, Yinuo Xuanyuan and Yola Brormann.

Contribution to the Leipzig Book Fair 2024

The presentation Forms of (ex-)Change was originally compiled on the occasion of the Leipzig Book Fair 2024 . However, in light of the current political and cultural climate in Germany, the intended presentation could not take place in Leipzig and can therefore now be seen in Rotterdam. The project is supported by the Dutch Embassy and the Representation of Flanders in the Belgian Embassy in Berlin.
