100 Years of Jazz in Rotterdam

100 Years of Jazz in Rotterdam

Jazz first came to Rotterdam when the port was being built and it has remained at the heart of the city’s cultural scene ever since. Year after year, the North Sea Jazz Festival attracts the finest jazz musicians from all over the world, but great music can be heard all year round in any of the city’s many jazz venues.

NN North Sea Jazz Festival 2019 // 12-14 July

It’s the world-famous and beloved jazz festival that needs no introduction. For three days straight, enjoy the past, present and future of jazz, with cameo appearances by big-name artists in blues, soul, funk, hip-hop, world music and pop. Like every year, the stages of North Sea Jazz will be welcoming some of the greats, but you’ll also have plenty of opportunities to discover new talent!

A part of this year’s line up: Young Gun Silver Fox, Rag’n’Bone Man, Toto, Janelle Monáe, Ms. Lauryn Hill, Burt Bacharach, Diana Krall, Jamie Cullum, Chance the Rapper, Joe Jackson, Jonathan Jeremiah and Marc Broussard.

Tip: the after-party, Boogieball (in jazz club BIRD) is legendary – don’t miss it. That’s where the bands and artists meet to jam or play DJ until the wee hours.

Jazz Routes

On Sunday 30 June, five long gone jazz stages in Rotterdam, which were significant in the 100 years that jazz has been around in this city, can be visited on the Historic Jazz Route from Pschorr to Bird. There is a one-day outdoor programme at the Maritime Museum, Oude Binnenweg, Grote Kerkplein (B14) and Garden of Bird. On 7 July, you can enjoy various concerts in Zuid by bike. If you prefer the water, then board the Jazz Ship on 29 June. By train is also possible. The Jazz Night Express leaves for Berlin on 28/29 June.

Rotterdammers born and bred share the secrets of their city in the free Rotterdam Routes app. There is also a Jazz Route.

Jazz Venues

Rotterdam has many jazz stages presenting both the big names and the new talent. Concert hall De Doelen and jazz stage LantarenVenster offer the full range of the genre, from modern to world jazz. In the country’s oldest jazz club Dizzy, you’ll find a lot of local talent. Meanwhile, trendy BIRD focuses on straight jazz and crossovers with soul, Latin, funk and electronic music. You’ll also find frequent big-name shows here.
