Never before have so many people been able to climb onto the roof in Rotterdam. The annual Dakendagen are already a regular fixture; but next year there will be a big one-off rooftop event.
In addition to the well-known festival, Rotterdamse Dakendagen now also organizes the Rotterdam Rooftop Walk, a route at roof level including an air bridge between WTC Rotterdam and the Bijenkorf.
The design is a collaboration with architectural firm MVRDV. You can make the spectacular crossing above the Coolsingel for a month – the first visitors go up on Ascension Day – but unique views are not all that this walk has to offer. While you walk over and between the roofs, you experience how innovative roof use contributes to a better future for cities and city dwellers. Although the walk is at an altitude, it remains accessible to visit: adults can go up for a small amount and children can go for free. More practical information will follow in the spring of 2022.
Rotterdamse Dakendagen wants to realize this major event next to the existing festival in June, in collaboration with the Municipality of Rotterdam and many other partners. Companies and non-profit organizations show their latest roof innovations on the roofs, including in the field of greenery, water, energy generation and residential and recreational space on roofs. Artists and scientists also visualize the future of the roof and the city. The result is a major manifestation where all metropolitan challenges of our time are presented: from protecting residents against the consequences of climate change, to creating safe and pleasant public space in a city that is becoming increasingly crowded.
The Rotterdam Rooftop Walk will take place in 2022 during the Rotterdam Architecture Month , when the innovative strength and quality of architecture in the city is celebrated with festivals, exhibitions and lectures. The design builds on a tradition of large crowd pullers at heights, such as ‘De Trap’ in 2016. This temporary intervention was designed by MVRDV in the context of Rotterdam celebrates the city!, the manifestation in honor of 75 years of reconstruction after the bombing. on Rotterdam. But also further back, to the C70 cable car and the construction of the Euromast for the Floriade in 1960.
