The Nieuwe Café is the restaurant of the Nieuwe Instituut. It is an inspiring place to meet up throughout the day and has an informal feel. The Nieuwe Café has a large terrace overlooking the pond and the space can be enlarged into the foyer of the Nieuwe Instituut. This allows groups of up to 300 people to eat and drink here. The menu varies with the season and its wholesome reasonably priced food includes organic fare.
Design and innovation – in the fields of architecture, design and e-culture – are at the heart of the activities of the Nieuwe Instituut. Three multiyear programmes – Landscape and Interior, Things, and Materials – and a programme with a theme that changes annually (2015: World’s Fairs) are the starting point for everything the institute does. The Nieuwe Instituut organises events, including exhibitions, research, lectures and publications around these programmes.
The building dates from 1993 but was thoroughly modernised in 2010 by the original architect, Jo Coenen.
The Nieuwe Café is in the Nieuwe Instituut on the Museumpark road in the Museumkwartier district and easy to get to by metro and by tram 7 and tram 20 (the Eendrachtsplein stop). It is about a 15-minute walk from Rotterdam Central Station. The Museumpark parking garage is opposite the building.
