New Café (New Institute)

The New Café will be run by Manuela Goncalves Tavares and her team as of September 2021. There are colorful, mostly vegetable and seasonal dishes on the menu. The café, including the most beautiful terrace in Rotterdam, is also accessible without a ticket for the museum.

Manuela is world famous in Rotterdam, including from restaurant Coco in the Hoogstraat and previous companies such as Toko 94 and Toko Trash. For her, heart and soul are essential ingredients in the kitchen. Hospitality is not an ever-changing concept, but something that builds on tradition and adds something new to it. She cooks from an approach that she has called ‘tokological’ and which means that she uses the hidden treasures, flavors and cultures that you find in the various shops in the city: a truly Rotterdam mix of Afro-Caribbean, Asian and Mediterranean cuisines. The menu of Het Nieuwe Café includes colorful vegetarian and vegan dishes that are often seasonal. For example, the New Café serves a purple sweet potato soup with coconut milk, lime and plantain or a bowl with mushrooms, bok choy, colored noodles and seaweed flakes.

Catering and groups

There are also options for (large) groups to come by for lunch, drinks or dinner. Het Nieuwe Café provides catering for events; from exhibition openings to programs of organizations that use the facilities of Het Nieuwe Instituut. For more information, please contact .


The greenery is in the hands of Frank Bruggeman and Hans Engelbregt. The bar is a design by Eric Roelen and the artwork on the wall is by Johannes Schwartz.
