5 Mexican Food Hotspots
5 Mexican Food Hotspots You Have to Try in Rotterdam
9 May 2018 by Jocelina
Rotterdam is a bustling cultural melting pot that will inspire all your senses. The city of architecture has an incredible food scene and there’s one particular cuisine you can’t miss when visiting: Mexican. From the recently opened Salsa Shop which combines the best of both fast food and casual dining to Instagram hotspot Alfredo’s Taqueria, tacos and burritos definitely reign supreme in Rotterdam. And with good reason! Mexican food isn’t just exciting, it’s one of the four cuisines protected by UNESCO as heritage for humanity.
While Mexican food is rich, many dishes are surprisingly healthy and balanced making it an excellent choice for a tasty lunch or dinner. If reading this makes you hungry, then read on for my top 5 places to enjoy delicious Mexican food in Rotterdam.
1. Salsa Shop – Fresh Mexican Food, Fast
Delicious burritos, salads, burrito bowls and tacos in less than a minute after ordering? Yes, you can at SALSA SHOP in Rotterdam! For less than 10 euros you get fast Mexican food made with fresh ingredients. SALSA SHOP prepares them every day and the menu makes it easy to choose by giving you four options: burritos, 3 tacos, bowls and salads and they also offer one vegetarian option. Top it off with your favourite salsa, something you can taste before choosing in the new shops.
After originally opening in 2014 in Amsterdam and later on in Utrecht and The Hague, the latest SALSA SHOP in Rotterdam marks their seventh branch in the Netherlands.

2. Alfredo’s Taqueria – Mexican Millennial Pink Hotspot
If you want to escape a rainy day in Rotterdam then you can always go to sunny Mexico at Alfredo’s Taqueria. Dennis Ebeli, owner of the restaurant, has Mexican roots and opened a restaurant that is a delicious testament to Mexico. You won’t be able to miss it as the colourful interior will call you in when you walk by.

The colours and atmosphere of buildings by legendary Mexican architect Luis Barragán formed the inspiration for Alfredo’s Taqueria’s interior. The architect was frustrated by the cold functionalism of modernism so he decided to embrace space, colour and light to create buildings that express warmth and serenity. Something you will definitely feel once you see the deep blue and pink colour of the stairs and bar at Alfredo’s Taqueria. A blue so unique I’ve only seen it in Mexico and the Jardin Majorelle in Marrakesh Morocco.
When it comes to food, Alfredo’s Taqueria offers fashionable Mexican street and comfort food, serious drinks and urban culture. If you’re not sure what to have, try the Tasting Menu with two appetizers, 3 tacos and a dessert.

3. Supermercado Rotterdam – Sweet Potato Fries & Nachos
While I was looking for a new place to have sweet potato fries, I never thought my search would end up at Supermercado, a restaurant that offers a delightful mix of Mexican tacos, Argentinian ribeye and Peruvian ceviche. And they even thought of the little ones with their ‘Mini Mercado’, a fun corner for the kids.
A Margarita for this Señorita
Before going out, locals love to have a drink at the Witte de Withstraat. Supermercado is right next to it, and lucky for you they also have a cocktail bar. They offer a wide range of cocktails, from classics such as the Margarita to the Pornstar Martini and if you don’t see your favourite cocktail on the list, just ask and they will be happy to make it for you.

4. Cinema Culinair – Como Agua Para Chocolate Mexican Food
Remember when I said Rotterdam will delight all your senses? All of it will come together and make ‘sense’ at Cinema Culinair where you can watch a culinary movie and eat at the same time!
What you see is what you get, making Cinema Culinair a must-see & eat for cosmopolitan foodies & cinephiles. The culinary script of the movie forms the inspiration for the chefs and waiters so you’ll be tasting the same delicious dishes you see in the film as you see them.
Mexican Movie & Food
Como agua para chocolate (Alfonso Arau, 1992) is a sensual food film taking you to the Mexico of 1900. Tita and Pedro are madly in love, but she can’t marry Pedro; her sister must marry him. When Tita is asked to make their wedding cake, Tita discovers that she can do strange things with her cooking skills … she can make others feel her excitement, grief, revenge and longing. The film is a Mexican classic about love, seduction, desire and romance and was nominated for the Golden Globe Award. The film is in Spanish with English subtitles.

5. Popocatepetl – Mexican bites, food & cocktails to share
The historical ports give Rotterdam its charm and characteristic skyline. Popocatepetl aka Popo is located at the Spaanse Poort in Rotterdam, and on a sunny day make sure you sit outside to have a tasty Mexican meal with a view of the Oude Haven (Old Harbour).
Lots of great options for Mexican food lovers
Popo also has one of the most elaborate Mexican food menus with unique dishes that caught my eye. I will definitely have to go back and try the Huevos rancheros ‘Mexican style fried eggs’, sweet potato fries with chipotle mayonnaise, avocado cheesecake and several reviews also recommended the To Share meal: The Mexican plate (Deluxe).
Just like SALSA SHOP, Popocatepetl has venues in different cities in the Netherlands like The Hague, Utrecht and Nijmegen among others.
