5 Unique Shops for DIY, Handmade & Colorful Gifts

16 December 2017 by Martine and Jocy

Rotterdam is a vibrant city that continues to surprise me in every way even after living here for so long. Every few months a new hotspot will open making it a fresh and surprising city to live in and visit. But it’s also a hidden gem when it comes to shopping.

Markt Binnenrotte Centrummarkt

Every Tuesday and Saturday, the Binnenrotte (the large square near Station Blaak) becomes the place to go to buy vegetables, fruits, food, flowers and much more for a budget price. Near the Central Library you’ll find my favorite spot at the market: the fabric & DIY stalls! For just 1 EUR you can find a creative iron on patch and sometimes even fabric. I come here every Saturday to get my fabrics, mostly at Budgetstoffen.nl, but right next to the Library you’ll find a stall that I always recommend to people who have taken up sewing since the prices are super cheap: they start at 1-2 EUR per meter. Every week is a surprise, and I was impressed when I even found haute couture fabrics from Isabel Marant for just 7 EUR!

Even if you’re not into sewing you can come here to buy tools to customize an old denim jacket, pants or bag with fun iron on patches. Note that depending on the day you go you’ll find different stalls for DIY and fabrics.

Naaicafé Caroline Vogel

If all the colorful fabrics & DIY stalls at Blaak inspired you to create, then the Naaicafe is where you’ll learn how to make clothes and work with a sewing machine. In 2010, I did a beginner’s course here and my creative journey has evolved ever since. The whole place is so cozy and welcoming, from the tea & cookie you get before the class starts to the friendly teachers who always know how to explain things with a smile. The Naaicafe has several different courses for every level from beginners (Naaien door Beginners) to more advanced classes (Textiel kneepjes cursus).

Are you in Rotterdam for a few weeks or months? Just walk in from Tuesday to Saturday or get their strippenkaart (ticket strip). This allows you to use their sewing machine, get useful tips and work in an inspiring and creative atmosphere.
